2025 WORLD FOOD SAFETY DAY CELEBRATION

The Capacity Development Project on Food Safety for Rural Farmers in Nigeria is a strategic initiative by the Growth for Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (GSAI) to tackle the pressing issue of food safety in Nigeria and productively commemorate World Food Safety Day 2025. Scheduled to commence in April 2025, this two-month hybrid project will train 370 farmer cooperative leaders from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The program aims to equip these leaders with comprehensive knowledge of food safety standards, practical skills, and the tools to cascade this knowledge to over 100,000 cooperative members nationwide.

Key project components include:

COMPONENT 1

Nigeria Farmers town hall Summit (NIFATS) / 2025 World food Safety day celebration (26th – 28th June 2025)

COMPONENT 2

FARM FOOD SAFETY COMPLIANCE TRAINING

For active and aspiring farmers

  • 8 weeks virtual training (1st May – 27th June 2025)

The project aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). By empowering rural farmers with knowledge, fostering stakeholder collaboration, and driving innovative solutions, the project will enhance food safety practices, reduce foodborne illnesses, and improve livelihoods across rural farming communities.

Sustainable Agriculture Advocates Fellowship (SAAF)

This is a continuous 3 months long fellowship program that will rigorously train and equip selected youths via lectures, tasks, capstone projects etc. with in-depth knowledge of sustainable agriculture concepts and advocacy skills with an aim of deploying them to farm communities and farmer clusters to carry out continued sensitization to rural farmers within their communities. The 1st batch cohort of the project which will began in November 2024 has a major objective to raise local networks of young people who will consistently advocate for adoption of sustainable agricultural practices within their community. They will be grassroots sensitization and advocacy agents for sustainable agriculture. The project will have the following components

  • Fellowship course training
  • Fellowship capstone project
  • Structuring of the Sustainable Agriculture Advocates City hub (SAACH)

Green Careers Advocacy Project (GCAP)

An educational and sensitization project that aims to use different educational, sensitization and awareness techniques to inspire young people to pick interest in various innovative and profitable careers in sustainable agriculture. The project objective is to add at least 500, 000 young innovative professionals to the Nigerian food systems value chain thereby increasing the systems efficiency and capacity which will in turn support farmers to produce more and earn more. The GCAP components include

  • Webinars
  • Physical training workshops
  • Social media essay competition
  • Street interview and documentary vox pop

Media for Agricultural Development Project (M4ADP)

This project seeks to utilise media channels to develop the agricultural sector by improving access to information, spotlighting innovations and showcasing groundbreaking success stories in the agricultural sphere. This project will work with the following components to achieve its target objectives;

  • Agriculture for today and tomorrow TV program
  • Sustainable Agric Blog

10,000 YAM HEAPS CULTIVATION PROJECT

Growth for Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (GSAI) is pleased to announce the launch of its 10,000 Yam Heaps cultivation Project (10kYHCP), aimed at supporting 20 rural farmers in kubwa, Abuja to cultivate at least 10,000 stands of yam using sustainable and climate-smart agricultural practices. This 9-month project (April – December 2025), is designed to generate financial returns for partners while fostering food security and employment opportunities in rural communities in Abuja and environs. The 10kYHCP will:

  • Support 20 rural farmers by providing inputs and technical assistance.
  • Provide upto 40% financial returns for all partners
  • Promote sustainable and climate-smart agricultural practices.
  • Cultivate at least 10,000 yam tubers, divided into sub-units of 1,000 yam stands to be
    managed by 2 rural farmers each.
  • Be executed by GSAI in partnership with Daesbla Agro Industries, serving as technical
    experts.
